The Punjab government announced the reopening of schools across the province, except in Lahore and Multan, from November 19, pending favorable weather conditions. The Punjab provincial administration closed public and private schools in 18 districts from Nov. 7 to 17 due to smog. The Punjab pollution was declared a “calamity” last month. On Sunday, Lahore’s Air Quality Index slipped out of the “hazardous” category for the first time in 12 days.

The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the ambient air quality has improved in most districts of Punjab due to rain in upper Punjab and changes in wind direction and speed. Therefore, all educational institutions, except those in Lahore and Multan Divisions, will open on Tuesday, November 19, with students and staff present.

School Timing After Winter Holidays
Four restrictions were set for schools, including the requirement for students and staff to wear face masks and for schools to remain closed before 8:45 am. It also said outdoor sports and extracurricular activities would be banned, and schools would have to vary class-wise closure times to reduce traffic.

The Punjab School Education Department told CEOs to follow the instructions as mentioned earlier. The EPA also directed all schools in the Rawalpindi division—comprising Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal districts—to reopen on Tuesday with staff and students present. Northwestern breezes, agricultural burning reduction, and government smog reduction measures have improved city air quality, according to the EPA. It warned that the AQI was still dangerous.
Private Tuition Institutions Remain Closed till 24 November 2025
On Friday, the School Education Department of Punjab issued a notification stating that, due to the current smog conditions and reduced visibility, the closure and transition to the online system of all educational institutions (public and private), including private tuition centers up to the higher secondary level (12th grade), in the Province of Punjab, except in the territorial jurisdiction of District Murree, is hereby extended until November 24, 2025.
