The ICC Champions Trophy History

The ICC Champions Trophy is an iconic cricket tournament. First staged in 1998 in Dhaka, Bangladesh; South Africa defeated West Indies in its inaugural final to claim this prestigious competition.

Starting as an open competition in 1985, teams eventually played in groups before competing against one another in knockout matches of an expanded competition called ICC Champions Trophy in 2002 – India and Sri Lanka winning together due to rain interruption in their final match twice at Colombo Stadium.
